Keoghs Marine Electrics can supply a full range of Maxwell anchor rodes, including chain only, rope only or pre-spliced combination rope and chain rodes. Various lengths of chain, suitable for vessels from 6 metres (20 feet) to over 60 metres (200 feet), are available in short or stud link variations in both metric and imperial sizes. Maxwell stocks both 3-strand and 8 plait braid nylon rope commonly used on vessels up to 20 metres (65 feet), as well as ropes and hawsers commonly seen on superyachts.
Tips for Rope/Chain Anchor Rodes
For best operations of rope/chain anchor rodes, we would suggest the following be checked.
The Amount of Rope/Chain in the Locker
When using Rope/Chain Gravity needs to be on your side. If the anchor locker is full the rope won’t have enough weight to fall, it will slow down and want to follow the gypsy around.
Rule of thumb is 450mm from the top of the pile to the underside of the deck, sometimes more.
Rope Stripper
For rope operation, the winch needs to have a stripper. A stripper is a band that wraps around the gypsy and is fastened to each side of the chain picker. Sometimes this design may vary depending on winch make and model. Not enough rope weight and no stripper and the rope won’t drop out of the jaws and into the anchor locker.
The Tensioning Finger
A tensioning finger is designed to put pressure on the rope and push it into the rope jaw on the gypsy. Insufficient pressure and the rope will not grip in the gypsy.
Note
Rope/Chain is never our preference as an all-chain rode works mechanically every time. Any brand of winch may or may not work well or work at all with rope and chain given these issues.
